Last evening, distributor and president of Tamil Nadu Theatres and Multiplexes Owners Association, M Tirupur Subramaniam, convened a press meet to announce that as of Sunday, Petta‘s collections have crossed Rs 100 crore.

“This is the actual data, and is not sourced from other reports or anywhere else. The cinema distributors association have the information that for the first time, in 11 days, in Tamil Nadu alone, the film has crossed Rs 100 crore. Theatre owners, distributors, producers, all are very happy about the success of the film,” he said.

Following this, Viswasam‘s distributors KJR studios tweeted that their eight-day collections in the state, as of yesterday, have crossed Rs 125 crore. They said this was data with proof. “Thanks to our distributors, theatre owners and most importantly our angali pangalis (fans),” they said.

Karthik Subbaraj’s Rajinikanth-starrer Petta has collected more than his previous film 2.0 in the state. 2.0 opened to Rs 18.2 crore on day 1, and made Rs 70 crore at the Tamil Nadu box office by day 7. Before this, his film Kaala earned Rs 52.52 crore in the state in seven days.

Director Siva’s fourth collaboration with Ajith, Viswasam has also collected more than his previous film Vedalam, which collected Rs 60 crore from Tamil Nadu at the end of eight days, and is said to have earned Rs 100 crore worldwide.

Petta and Viswasam released on January 10, a little ahead of Pongal. Many industry trackers made estimations about the films’ collections since day two. This was opposed by Sun Pictures who said they didn’t know from where the trackers were getting data when they themselves were yet to receive data from theatres in the state.

Producers, distributors, theatre owners said a more reliable system is required to supply collections data, and the TFPC and distributors council must do something about this.
