Photograph Trailer Review: Unconventional Romance Between A Tourist Guide and a Tourist

Ritesh Batra’s The Lunchbox was marked by the unconventional romance between its lead characters. Continuing it is Batra’s new film Photograph, starring Nawazzudin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra.

Siddiqui plays Rafi, a travel guide who makes his living by clicking photographs of tourists. One day he comes across Sanya Malhotra’s Noorie from the Gateway of India in Mumbai. Other than their reclusive nature, there is no element of commonality between these two. The movie, very much aware of this fact, remarks this by making a character ask Sidiqqui if the two were actors and were shooting for a movie; how else could these two be together?

Towards the second half of the trailer, Siddiqui’s grandmother, who is eager to find a girl for him, is also thrown into this already strange mix. Siddiqui and Malhotra decide to pretend to be in love for the sake of his grandmother. At this point, the film treads an oft-beaten path.  Yet, they are left with no choice as his grandmother has stopped taking her pills until she finds a woman for her. The city of Mumbai also becomes a character as the three are shown roaming around. The movie has been shot on location in the city.
