From Thaanaa Serndha Koottam To Sketch, Here Are The Pongal 2018 Releases

There is a lot in store for cinema-goers for Pongal this year. Five films are reportedly slated to release on Pongal 2018. Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, Sketch, Gulaebaghavali, Bhaskar Oru Rascal and Madura Veeran.

Here are the films:

Thaanaa Serndha Koottam

Thaanaa Serndha Koottam titled Gang in Telugu stars Suriya. The film is directed by Vignesh Shivan, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Apart from Suriya, the film stars Keerthy Suresh, Suresh Menon, Ramya Krishnan, and Senthil. The story is inspired from Akshay Kumar’s Special 26.

Suriya at the audio launch said that though the movie is inspired from Bollywood’s Special 26 but director Vignesh Shivan gave it his own spin. It’s based on a real incident that took place in 1987. “Usually, in most of my movies, I would be seen tensed and infuriated while emoting. But in Thaanaa Serndha Koottam, my role is completely refrained from such attitudes. Vignesh Shivan would often correct it saying that ‘Sir, the characterisation doesn’t need to get angry. Everything including the dialogue deliveries and body language were completely new to me,” he said.

Sketch

Vikram’s Sketch, directed by Vijay Chander of Vaalu fame, promises to be a mass action entertainer set in North Madras. The film, which is bankrolled by Thaanu’s V Creations, has Malayalam actor Baburaj playing a crucial role and music is composed by Thaman.

Gulaebaghavali

Gulaebaghavali, starring Prabhu Deva and Hansika Motwani, is a black comedy with Revathy, Mansoor Ali Khan in pivotal roles. The film takes its name from an MGR film that released in 1955. Kalyaan (of Kadha Solla Porom fame) is at the helm of this film that is produced by KJR Studios.

Madura Veeran

Cinematographer-turned-director and producer PG Muthiah’s Madura Veeran has Shanmugha Pandian, son of actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth in the lead. The film is on Jallikattu, however, the director said that the film is not about the protest, or the controversy surrounding the sport, but about the tradition.

Bhaskar Oru Rascal

Arvind Swami sports a new look in this filmA remake of the Malayalam hit Bhaskar The Rascal, the film has Arvind beating thugs set to a thundering background score.

Directed by Siddique, who was also at the helm of the original, the film is set to release on January 12. Amala Paul plays a young mother, and a part of the film is reportedly dedicated to the romance between Amala and Arvind.
