Earlier, the Council had announced that no films would be released during the October 23 weekend. The Council is looking into regulation of big budget and small budget film releases, to ensure that all films have an opportunity for proper recognition and screen visibility. The decision on the strike had come on the heels of issues surrounding the release of Paayum Puli, and concerns raised by Chengalpet area theatre owners, which had subsequently become a hindrance for new film releases.

On September 4, Vishal’s Paayum Puli‘s release was stalled by the Chengalpet distributiors who wanted the producers of Paayum Puli, Vendhar Movies, to settle losses incurred by Lingaa‘s run at the box-office. According to sources, new plans are being laid out to prevent such last minute hassles in the Tamil film industry in future.
