Pulipaarvai Protest

Pulipaarvai’s audio launch event was marred by protests by a student’s group calling for a ban on the film. The film which is about the life of LTTE Leader Prabhakaran’s son Balachandran and his eventual death, has been in the news a lot recently. Posters showing a young Balachandran holding weapons had already triggered controversy. Earlier this month, four different student groups –  Maatram Maanavar Ilaiyor Iyakkam, Free Tamil Eelam Students Organisation, Tamil Youth and Students association and Progressive Students Front had called for a ban on the film, alleging that the film promoted Sri Lankan interests.

At the audio release function which happened on Saturday at Sathyam Cinemas,  a group of students began to shout slogans as soon as the film’s producer, Vendhar Movies’ Pachamuthu went onstage. The protestors were from the Progressive Students’ Front who began shouting slogans calling for the immediate arrest of Seeman, who was presiding over the function. Members of the audience began to attack the students, leading to a full blown fight in which several were injured. Police personnel had to be called in to ease the situation. According to onlookers, the student group was led away in a police van to the nearest station.
