In a PTI interview via DNA, Ranbir says, “I am a big admirer of Fawad as a talent. His role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil added so much of dignity and so much of an impact. He was kind enough to do it as it was like a guest appearance, it wasn’t a big part. It was unfortunate that due to the political climate Fawad had to bear the brunt. But he is someone who I admire and I also connected to him as a friend. I would love to do a film with him where we can share the screen space for a longer time.”

Fawad Khan was a huge success in Pakistan, and made his Bollywood debut with Khoobsurat, which starred Sonam Kapoor. Later, Fawad Khan worked with Ranbir’s father, Rishi Kapoor, in Kapoor and Sons.

Ranbir said his family, especially his mother Neetu, are huge fans of Fawad. “I loved his part in Kapoor and Sons. My parents are his fans. My mother is borderline obsessed with Fawad, she has been watching serials like Humsafar,” he said.

Fawad Khan had a brief role in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, but the controversy over Pakistani actors in India meant that Fawad could not take part in the film’s promotion, and worse, had to leave the country. Fawad’s casting was objected to by right-wing Hindu groups, and eventually director Karan Johar apologised to political parties to pave the way for a compromise that would allow the film to release without incident.

Ranbir is currently promoting Jagga Jasoos, and shooting for Sanjay Dutt’s biopic.
