Omung Kumar’s Sarbjit Singh biopic grabbed headlines when Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was confirmed to be playing the role of Sarbjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur in it. Now a TOI report states that actor Randeep Hooda will play Sarabjit Singh, a farmer from Bhikhiwind in Punjab which lies just 5 kms away from the Indo-Pakistan border.
Singh inadvertently crossed the border over to Pakistan in 1990 after having a couple of drinks. He was captured by Pakistan army, passed for an Indian spy and was given capital punishment in 1991. He rotted in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore for 23 years, before he was killed by inmates a few days after the death of Afzal Guru in India.
Hooda’s performance in Imitiaz Ali’s Highway was much appreciated.
