Directed by Kabir Khan, the film is a retelling of India’s 1983 cricket world cup victory, and the actor will be playing the role of the then captain Kapil Dev.
Ranveer Singh shared a photo from one of his practice sessions on social media to announce the news. He can be seen training with the former cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu.
Speaking about the movie, Ranveer had said in an IE report last year, “It is an important part of our sports history and history as a nation, our first world cup win had put us on top of the world, stamped our presence on the map. India defeated West Indies, victors of the first two world cups in the tournament by 43 runs to clinch the trophy.”
Adding that playing the role of Kapil Dev was a huge deal, he said, “I always wanted to be part of a film where the take away would be that sense of national pride. The story of underdogs’ triumph is completely lost. There is a whole generation that needs to know and I am happy to be fronting it.”
Kabir Khan, who last directed the Salman Khan starrer Tubelight had announced the movie in September 2017.

I feel honoured and privileged to be part of this film. One of the greatest underdog stories of all time – finally coming to the silver screen. What a day it's been. To have met our sporting heroes in the flesh and be regaled by their stories – full of nostalgia, humour, emotion…a truly unforgettable event. Im filled with a sense of responsibility and committed to making a film that the entire nation can be proud of. The greatest Indian sports story will now get its deserved cinematic glory! It's time to #Relive83 ?may God bless our endeavour. Thank you for this once in a lifetime opportunity @kabirkhankk … lets do this !!!
The makers had recently hired Jiiva for Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s part. “The film’s director Kabir Khan was clear that he wanted to cast a Tamil actor for the role of Srikkanth. He was looking for an actor who was young and talented and eventually found that in actor Jiiva. When he approached Jiiva for the part in October, he came on board instantly,” said a source close to the film.
’83 is the latest sport based movie to come from Bollywood. In the past, Sushant Singh Rajput had essayed the role of Dhoni, and Emraan Hashmi starred as Mohammed Azharuddin. Sachin: A Billion Dreams, a documentary based on Sachin Tendulkar’s life has also been made.
