Sources close to the film told Silverscreen that these are rumours and Sathyaraj is not part of the cast. According to DTNext, Atlee had approached Sathyaraj to play Vijay’s father in the film. “He had plans to cast Sathyaraj as the father of Vijay’s character Michael. He was indeed approached by Atlee. However, after listening to the story, Vijay expressed his desire to play the father character as well, to which Atlee agreed,” the source said.

Sathyaraj, who was seen as a father in Kanaa last year, and in the Telugu film Jersey as Coach Murthy, currently has Party, Madai Thirandhu, Theerpukal Virkapadum and Khakhee in the pipeline.

The first-look poster of Bigil, which released on Vijay’s birthday on June 22, confirmed speculations about his double role in the film. Sources speculate that the name of Vijay’s father is Bigil, a colloquial term for ‘whistle’, and he plays a fisherman. Michael, Bigil’s son in the film is said to be the coach of a women’s football team who grew up in the beaches of Royapuram.

According to latest reports, the trailer and songs of the film will release by the end of this month. However, an official confirmation is yet to come.

This is Vijay’s third collaboration with Atlee, after two consecutive hits – Theri (2016) and Mersal (2017). He has previously worked with Nayanthara in Prabhu Deva’s Villu, and Nayanthara worked with Atlee in Raja Rani. Others in the cast include Varsha Bolamma, Indhuja and Kathir – who are reportedly football players, while Jackie Shroff, Vivekh and Yogi Babu have important roles.
