The actress’s statement:

“As a devoted mother and private person and with complete awareness that my daughter will one day be old enough to read the news about herself, I would only like to say that I will never, ever be commenting on the dissolution of my marriage. Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same.”

The couple announced their engagement in September 2013, following which they had their daughter around the same time next year. They got married after the birth of their child.

The two had been shuttling between Romain’s Paris residence and Scarlett’s New York City house, due to their work commitments and schedules. While it is believed that the two separated last summer, they had even opened a gourmet popcorn shop – ‘Yummy Pop’ – together last October. According to the Washington Post, Romain had been ‘tired of running his life and his child’s life’ based on Scarlett’s shooting schedules.

The actress filed for divorce in New York, where the two primarily reside, stating that the marriage was “irretrievably broken”. She seeks joint custody of Rose, but wants the child to live with her. Romain’s lawyer, Hal Mayerson, told the Associated Press that her ex-husband was “shocked” by the filing, and views it as a “pre-emptive strike” in a potential custody battle. He also added that he was more of the “primary parent” for their daughter considering Scarlett used to work all the time.
