Shah Rukh Khan Buys Hindi Remake Rights Of Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram

The critically acclaimed classic Hey Ram, written, directed and acted by Kamal Haasan, will be made into a Hindi movie and Shah Rukh Khan has bought the remake rights of the 2000 movie.

Discussion between the two actors took place when Kamal was in Mumbai to attend the 4th edition of ‘Reframing the Future of Film’ hosted in honour of Christopher Nolan.

According to Mumbai Mirror, Kamal was quoted as saying, “Shah Rukh only got a wristwatch for acting in my film at the time because, by the end of it, I had nothing left in hand. Now, he is the brand ambassador for a watch brand. I am glad that he got the Hindi rights of Hey Ram from Bharat bhai (co-producer Bharat Shah). He should have some memory of the film as he gave his friendship and service for it.”

The film is set in the 1940s, around the time of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh Khan essayed the role of archaeologists. Hey Ram highlighted many socio-political movements that had originated during India’s freedom struggle and it also alludes to the Babri Masjid demolition.

The film also had Rani Mukerji, Hema Malini, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and Nasser. The film was submitted for that year’s Oscars but was not nominated. The film won three National Awards. Kamal Haasan himself produced this film under Raj Kamal Productions, Ilaiyaraaja has done the music for the movie. The film was made in both Tamil and Hindi.
