Sholay Releases In Pakistan

The cult classic Bollywood film Sholay has been released in theatres in Pakistan for the first time. The timeless revenge story, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini, hit theatres in the country on Friday, 40 years after its India release, said a PTI report.

The action film, directed by Ramesh Sippy, is an all-time blockbuster. In Pakistan, the film has been distributed by Geo films and Mandviwalla entertainment. The release was launched with a grand premiere in Karachi at the Neuplex, which was attended by several celebrities.

Noted Pakistani film critic ‘Omair Alavi said told PTI that Sholay’ has a huge set of fans in the country. He added that even when it was illegal to screen Indian movies in Pakistan, many people used to watch Bollywood films, including Sholay, on VCR’s.

Nadeem Mandviwalla is the exporter and distributor of the film in Pakistan. According to the PTI report, at one Cineplex where “Sholay” was being screened, the owners erected huge cut outs of Gabbar Singh, Jai and Veeru in a village like environment for the film goers.
