The sequel to Vipul Shah’s 2002 film Aankhen will star Amitabh Bachchan once again in the lead. Anees Bazmee, who wrote the 1993 Aankhen, directed by David Dhawan, will direct this sequel. The rest of the cast is yet to be decided. Shoot for the film will start mid-2019.
According to a report by Ahmedabad Mirror, one of the film’s producers Tarun Agarwal said, “Bachchan is on board, and for the rest of the cast, we are looking for younger actors and are currently in talks with some.”
Aankhen 2 was announced in 2016 by Gaurang Doshi who had produced the original film. The sequel had to be stopped because of a legal dispute, when Rajtaru Studio, owned by Tarun, moved court saying they had bought the rights to the film years back.
As reported by Masala.com, Bazmee said, “I kept asking Gaurang to get NOC from Rajtaru. He insisted I shouldn’t worry. ‘If I’m investing money surely I’ve got the basic rights in place,’ Gaurang told me. I went ahead with his conviction. We even had a mahurat ceremony attended by Bachchan saab.”
Tarun confirmed that he will now be producing the film with producer Eros International’s Sunil Lulla. “We will be filming in London and Georgia. The casino, as required in the story, has already been booked in Georgia. For the rest of the locations, we are scouting in the UK,” he said.
The 2002 film Aankhen was an adaptation of a Gujarati play Andhalo Pato (Blindman’s Buff), by Vipul Shah. It starred Amitabh along with Anil Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Arshad Warsi – as three blind men.
It was about a fired bank official Vijay Singh Rajput, played by Amitabh, who decides to take revenge on his former employers. He trains the three blind men to do the job for him. Sushmita Sen, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal were the others actors in the film.
Aankhen 2 is set to release in January 2020.
