Shraddha Srinath Interview: I Love Watching Malayalam Films, Always Wanted to Come Back

Shraddha Srinath Promotes 'Jersey'

Actor Shraddha Srinath, who has predominantly worked in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films, made her acting debut with the 2015 Malayalam film Kohinoor. After five years, she is set to make a comeback to the Malayalam film industry with a yet-to-be-titled project, directed by B Unnikrishnan and co-starring Mohanlal.

The actor said that she has always been a fan of Malayalam films. “I have actually been very vocal about how much I have wanted to work in Malayalam films because I feel like they do make the best films. I absolutely enjoy watching Malayalam films and I was always waiting to re-enter the industry. It wasn’t that I was busy or not feeling interested enough,” she said.

“My debut did happen in 2015 but it was not the lead character and in Indian cinema, the minute you are given not the main character it’s like you are not flooded with offers. So yeah, I debuted and I had a small part to play and it was not the heroine role so accordingly there were barely any films that I was receiving after. After I made a name for myself in Tamil and Kannada industries, I did receive a few films but nothing that really caught my fancy,” the actor said.

Talking about her upcoming film alongside Mohanlal, Shraddha said that it was not something that she can miss out on. “You don’t miss an opportunity to work with someone like Mohanlal.”

“To begin with I was told that Unnikrishnan, who is like one of the most celebrated directors in Kerala, is directing a film and there is Mohanlal sir in the lead, it already sounded really exciting. So I was already quite excited at the outset and then I was given a narration by Unni Sir himself and it sounded really interesting. It’s a more commercial film and it’s a space that I have not really explored. I mean it has all the thrills and it has all the sort of kicks that you know Mohanlal fans love. It has got all of that. The character is not like a privileged one. She is an IAS officer. Neither is the movie a privileged one. You can imagine sitting in a first day first show in a theatre in a Mohanlal film and then you have all these, just the things the fans like and just the kind of applause and whistles. For me, it was just the thrill of being a part of a Mohanlal film and an interesting part to play. She is an IAS officer and she is a very upright kind of a person. It was everything really. It was the genre, it was a space that I had not explored, its more of a commercial kind of a film. And there were all these amazing names and my character was a very interesting role to play,” Shraddha said.

Apart from this, the actor also has Tamil horror-thriller film Kaliyugam in the pipeline.

“The film is set in 2050, which should give you an idea of what the character should be like. The society will not be the way we see it now, it will be a lot harder and a lot more complicated and some of the things that we take for granted now will be scarce then. It is a dark kind of a vision of the future and my character is someone who is adapting to that kind of a life. We will start filming in January. I am still prepping for it. The preparation is just physical and a few movies for references that I can watch,” she said.

Directed by Pramod Sundar, the film will be produced by KS Ramakrishna of Prime Cinemas under the RK International banner. Shraddha also has an upcoming Kannada film Godhra, the shooting for which is currently going on.

Besides, she also has an upcoming OTT release co-starring R Madhavan, titled Maara. Talking about her character, the actor told Silverscreen India that the detailing is exceptional. “I have thoroughly enjoyed shooting for the film,” she added.

Maara will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on December 17.
