Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s New Twitter Account Suspended

Bollywood singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya was elated to get back on Twitter with a new handle – @SingerAbhijeet – soon after his original account was suspended last week. Through a video clip, he denounced “anti-nationals” and said that he respects the Indian army.

“This is my new Twitter account. Till the time my verified account is not active please follow me on this Twitter account. All other accounts by my name are fake and are trying to malign my reputation,” Abhijeet said in the video clip.

However, in a matter of few hours, his new account got suspended by Twitter.

On Monday, the singer spoke to ANI News about what Twitter really is, according to him:

“It’s because of us that Twitter gets followers, not the other way round. But people who don’t have any followers are running Twitter, who have made it a platform to voice out their opinions. I know many users who abuse a person left, right, and centre but still their accounts are never suspended. What I said was just ‘Besharam Budhia’ or supported Paresh Rawal on his tweet regarding Arundhati Roy..and still my account was suspended.”

Abhijeet’s Twitter account had been suspended last week after several users reported him for tweeting offensive comments at JNU student activist Shehla Rashid.

Abhijeet had previously retweeted a derogatory tweet about Rashid, adding:

In another tweet, he insulted a woman when she called him out for his incendiary tweets. He wrote, “You Ms Pak. Tell me your cage no? Will reach there…Will do the favourite pose.”

Shehla had criticised Paresh Rawal’s tweet about using writer Arundhati Roy as a human shield against stone pelters in Kashmir. The tweet led to several trolls tweeting abusively at her, as well as Abhijeet’s remarks.

After his account got suspended, the singer went on a rant about how Twitter was a platform for “anti-nationals, anti-Modi, and terrorist supporters“. In a show of solidarity with his colleagues, singer Sonu Nigam left Twitter, accusing the platform of being a “one-sided sham”.
