Sivakarthikeyan’s ‘Kanaa’ To Get A Chinese Release

Kanaa Movie Stills Starring Aishwarya Rajesh

Following a good response from audience, the makers of Kanaa have reportedly decided to release the movie in China. Starring Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead, Kanaa was produced by Sivakarthikeyan, and it released on December 21. It is currently running in theatres here.

According to a TNM report, the idea of a China release was mooted by Sathyaraj who played Aishwarya Rajesh’s father in the movie. The decision to dub the film in Chinese, and release it in China, came after this. Talks are reportedly on regarding the same.

Kanaa was centred on a girl who dreams about making it big in the world of cricket. It is one of the first Tamil films about women’s cricket. Arunraja Kamaraj, the director of the movie, said that with Sathyaraj’s role as a farmer, the movie was as much about farmers’ plight as it was about women’s cricket.

“I’m sure he will make us feel the life of farmers in India… His entry into this project made us feel more confident,” Kamaraj said.

Blade Shankar, Ilavarasu, Ramadoss, Rama and Savari Muthu had important roles, and Sivakarthikeyan played a cameo. The actor also sang one of the tracks in the film called ‘Vayadi Petha Pulla’, with his daughter Aaradhana.

Indian films, particularly those with women protagonists as leads, have done well in China. Recently, it was reported that Suseenthiran’s Kennedy Club has been sold to a local distribution house in China. The film is based on a women’s kabbadi team, and releases on April 14.

While there aren’t many other Tamil films on the list of Chinese releases, the Hindi films Dangal and Secret Superstar were both hits in the country.

Dangal released in May 2017, and collected close to $190 million, while Secret Superstar was the fifth highest grossing foreign film and second highest grossing Non-English film of 2018 in China. The latter even surpassed Black Panther (the ninth highest grossing film internationally) at the Chinese box office.

Hichki was the last movie with a female protagonist to become a success in the country. It released in October 2018, and featured Rani Mukherjee as a woman with a tourette syndrome who wants to become a teacher. In China, the movie collected Rs 153 crore, a major portion of its worldwide collection of its Rs 231 crore.
