A Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking a stay on the release of the film Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been filed in the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in this regard. The SPL has been filed to bring about a stay on the film’s release scheduled for tomorrow.
Tausif Sheikh, a lawyer, who filed the petition yesterday, said that the matter would come up for an urgent hearing in the court today, reports Business Standard. In his SLP, the petitioner sought an immediate stay on the release of the film as an ad interim relief. It stated the film may influence voters to vote in favour of a person, thus breaching the model code of conduct.
On Monday, the Bombay High Court had dismissed a PIL filed by Satish Gaikwad, a resident of Pune, who alleged that the film, if allowed for public viewing, would violate the Model Code of Conduct imposed by the EC. It also alleged that the film would fetch Prime Minister Narendra Modi electoral mileage. The petitioner further sought a complete ban on the trailer of the movie. Another PIL filed at the Delhi High Court on the same day was also dismissed.

However, latest reports suggest that the movie is likely to miss the release date of April 5. According to a report in Scroll.in, the movie has not been mentioned in cinema listings and is yet to receive a Censor certificate. The movie is likely to release on the initially planned date of April 12.
Directed by Omung Kumar, the biopic traces Modi’s life from his entry into politics till the 2014 general elections. Along with Vivek Oberoi, actors Zarina Wahab, Prashant Narayanan, Boman Irani, Barkha Bisht and Manoj Joshi play supporting roles.
