Steven Spielberg Does Not Want Netflix Movies To Be Considered For Oscars

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg is of the opinion that films by Netflix should not be considered for the Academy Awards because they are “TV movies”. In an interview with ITV News, the director who was promoting his upcoming film Ready Player One, said that there’s a challenge right now in the cinema industry owing to the rise of streaming.

“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. If it’s a good show, you deserve an Emmy. But not an Oscar,” he said, elaborating how indie and art films films used to be discovered via film festivals. “Television is thriving with quality and heart. But it poses a clear and present danger to film-goers,” he said, before talking about what he wouldn’t want for his Oscar-nominated The Post.

“I’ll still make The Post and ask an audience to please go out to theaters and see The Post and not make it for Netflix.”

According to Variety, digital streaming platforms have been met with a lot of hostility from other filmmakers in the past. Dunkirk director Christopher Nolan had reportedly called Netflix “bizarre” and “mindless.”
