Cinema Theatre Strike Update: Films Released Last Friday Will Have to Wait

Cinema Theatre strike

With close to 1,100 theatres across Tamil Nadu having downed their shutters to protest the local body taxes levied upon theatre owners, the films that were released last Friday – Ivan Thanthiran and Adhagapattadhu Magajanangale – had only a weekend’s run at the box office. However, they will again hit the screens when the strike is called off.

Speaking to Silverscreen about the current status of last Friday’s releases, director of Ivan Thanthiran,  Kannan, says, “Our film was doing well at the box office during the weekend. As the theatres are closed now, we have to wait until the issue is resolved. Today, Vishal, actor and general secretary of the Nadigar Sangam, and President of Tamil Film Producers Council, and other theatre owners are meeting the Chief Minister. If the issue is sorted out, we will, hopefully, again run our film in theatres. This is the status of  the other film as well.”

Kannan adds, “Theatre owners have promised us that once the strike is called of, they will not screen any new releases for a week, and will continue to screen the films that released last Friday.”
