Thugs Of Hindostan Trailer: It’s Aamir Khan Vs Amitabh Bachchan In This Potboiler

In keeping with the format of a typical potboiler, the trailer of Thugs of Hindostan introduces its characters in the ascending order of hierarchy in the plot – the villain, the supporting actor and the lead; namely, Lloyd Owen who plays a British officer, Amitabh Bachchan as Azaad and Aamir Khan as Firangi respectively.

Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, who previously directed Khan in Dhoom 3, and mounted as a historical action movie, Thugs of Hindostan is based on the 1839 novel ‘Confessions of a Thug’ written by Philip Meadows Taylor.

While Fatima Sana Shaikh plays the role of Zafira, Katrina Kaif, who plays Suraiyya, seems to have carried forward the legacy of her blink-and-miss character from Dhoom 3. Both the women are left without any dialogues throughout the trailer; Shaikh is shown fiddling around with a bow and arrow while Kaif has been strictly relegated to dance sequences.

Set in the 18th Century, the story is about a band of thugs led by Amitabh Bachchan who refuses to yield to the British demands. The British, in their bid to circumvent this problem, hires Aamir Khan, courtesy his thug-like qualities which the British believe would come in handy in defeating Bachchan.

A drunkard and slightly eccentric, Khan’s intentions are shown to be ambiguous and his loyalties constantly shifting between Bachchan and the British which lends the story an air of similarity to that of Avatar.

The inspiration-race doesn’t just stop there. The first-look posters that kept popping up throughout the past week had fuelled speculations about the movie bearing a strong resemblance to the Pirates of the Carribean. The trailer reinforces this notion with the background score and battle sequences involving similarly styled ships. Also, Khan’s character’s quirks reminds one of Jack Sparrow.

The tacky visuals effects are nothing to write home about. The makers seem to be banking heavily on the first time casting of Bachchan and Khan which explains why the trailer comes to a close with a duel between the two. Produced by Yash Raj Films, the movies releases on November 8.
