Sun TV said it will telecast 96, the love drama which became talk of the town in Kollywood, for Deepavali. However, Trisha Krishnan has said it would be unfair and have asked them to wait till at least Pongal to bring the film to TV.
On Saturday, Trisha, who plays the female lead in the film tweeted saying that 5 weeks after 96‘s release the film is still drawing crowds, and theatres have 80%.
Its our 5th week and we still have an 80% occupancy in all theatres. We as a team feel its unfair to be premiering 96 this early. Its our request to push it to a Pongal viewing pls @SunTV Will be grateful #96thefilm #Ban96MoviePremierOnSunTv

Many fans of the film also called the channel out for spoiling the theatrical run of the movie. They claimed Sun TV was doing this in order to push 96 out of the theatres, and thus secure more screens for Vijay’s Sarkar, releasing this Deepavali and produced by Sun Pictures.
Look at this @VishalKOfficial y can't u question this . .. . There is no difference between tamilrockers and @SunTV . Please take some action or request them . . #Ban96MoviePremierOnSunTv https://t.co/w3uXm1YjI3

Starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan in the lead, ’96 is a romantic drama written and directed by Prem Kumar. Produced by Nandagopal of Madras Enterprises, the music for the film has been composed by Govind Vasantha of Asuravadham fame. The film also stars Janagaraj, Kaali Venkat, Bagavathi Perumal, Devadarshini and Aadukalam Murugadoss.
Recently, the director Prem Kumar was accused of plagiarism, by an assistant director of Bharathiraja. However Prem Kumar denied the allegation saying that it was his own script which was written during the 2015 Chennai floods.
