Vanitha Mathil: Rima Kalingal, Bina Paul, Ramya Nambeesan Join The Kerala Women’s Wall

Women in Kerala gathered on the New Year to form a 620 km long human chain in support of gender equality and to promise to hold tight to the renaissance values. A brainchild of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the wall comes in the wake of the Sabarimala protests.

Women from various walks of life joined hands by 4.p.m yesterday to form a human chain that lasted close to 15 minutes across the length of the state. Apart from members of close 175 socio-cultural organizations, several celebrities were part of this movement.

Joining the wall from Calicut, actress and WCC member Rima Kallingal said that turnout proved that the majority of the people stood with the women of Kerala, reported Azhimukham. “This movement will be a model for the coming generations,” said the actress.

While screenwriter Deedi Damodaran joined Kallingal from Calicut, singer Sayanora Philip was part of the chain that was formed in Kannur. The movement saw active participation of the members of WCC like editor Bina Paul, award winning director Vidhu Vincent and actress Ramya Nambeesan.

Lauding the efforts of the women who turned up for the event, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said the wall had become a historic movement because of the same reason. He also expressed his gratitude towards the socio-political organizations that played a part in building the wall.

Opposition parties like the Congress and BJP were critical of the movement. There have also been reports of the women who participated in the attack coming under attack from RSS.

Manju Warrier’s withdrawal from the movement earlier this month had also made news. Apologizing for the lack of awareness from her side, the actress said that she had assumed that the  movement aimed at empowering women. However, a large section of the crowd considered the women’s wall as the left wing’s response to the Sabarimala protests. Therefore she said that she no longer wished to be part of the movement as it had acquired political undercurrents.

“My art is my politics, the same applied to women’s wall” wrote the actress in a Facebook post.
