Produced by PA Sebastian under the Time Ads Entertainment banner, the film is written by Anoop Menon and directed by Kannan Thamarakkulam.

Speaking to Silverscreen India, Thamarakkulam revealed that Varaal will be a political film. “The film will discuss the contemporary political scenario. Since Malayalam cinema has not seen an out-and-out political film in recent times, we decided to make this. The tagline, ‘Race Religion and Retribution’, has a relevance to present-day politics and is also connected to the film’s story,” he said, adding that Varaal’s subject will be relatable to audiences across India.

Thamarakkulam noted that Menon and he had discussed this film’s idea around 7-8 months ago. However, as both of them were busy with other films at the time, they could not work on it then. “Later, we pitched this idea to Sebastian and he was interested in producing the film. We also felt this would be right time make Varaal,” he added.

The filmmaker said the team is planning to start shooting in the coming weeks, as soon as they get Prakash Raj’s dates. “We have planned to shoot in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vagamon.” Ravi Chandran is the film’s cinematographer.

With NM Badusha on board as the project designer and Ajith Perumpilly as the project coordinator, KR Prakash serves as Varaal’s executive producer.

The film will also feature actors like Renji Panickar, Suresh Krissna, Shankar Ramakrishnan, Honey Rose and Irshad Ali, among several others. “Apart from them, we are planning to rope in a couple of top actors from the industry,” Thamarakkulam added.

Meanwhile, Menon, who was last seen in #Home, has a slew of films in the pipeline, including King Fish, Padma, Twenty one Gsm, and Pathonpatham Noottandu. Thamarakkulam, on the other hand, has a handful of upcoming films, including Udumbu, Vidhi, and The Feast (Virunnu).
