Varalaxmi Sarathkumar Slams Film Critics For Paid Reviews

Varalaxmi At The Mr. Chandramouli Press Meet

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar recently slammed film critics who she claimed were writing paid reviews. The statement comes in the wake of the cold reception that her latest movie Echcharikkai – Idhu Manidhargal Nadamaadum Idam got from some quarters.

Echarikkai stars Sathyaraj, Kishore and newcomer Vivek Rajagopal and has been directed by Sarjun who has previously directed short films like Maa and Lakshmi. It is a thriller in which Varalaxmi Sarathumar’s character is abducted and Sathyaraj is assigned to rescue her.

Sarathkumar took to Twitter to thank the audience for supporting her film despite some negative reviews.

Even though the movie came without any of the makings of a big budget film – huge star, famous music director, fancy producer and a big budget, the movie found an audience courtesy a few critics.

She said that paid reviews worked in various ways – some wrote for certain artistes while some attacked a particular actor and some even criticized the make-up worn by the actors in the movie.

She also said that the movie bore witness to a lot of politics before finally seeing the light of the day. A fight between a small distributor and a large distributor was a common thing and it was almost certain that the bigger distributor would walk away with the major share of theatres to release the movie.

It is into a world like this they brought a relatively small film like Echarikkarai – a movie that was one and a half years in the making, she says. She asked the viewers to not let paid reviews cloud their judgement and urged them to rather go to the theatres and find out for themselves.

She said that the audiences wielded the power to make or break a movie and asked them to go for smaller movies. She felt that if anyone had the capacity to save cinema, it was the audience.
