Weekend Playlist: A Celebration Of Love

The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down  Section 377 and decriminalize homosexuality has made it possible for the LGBTQI community to live and love freely. And so, we present a list of songs that talk about love in all its forms.

Labon Ko Karobaar from Befikre:

Stitched carefullyinto the middle of this song from Befikre is a visual of two men gently kissing each other on their lips, accompanied by a title card that reads ‘Love is freedom.’ Jaideep Sahni’s vivid lyrics for the song were set to tune by Vishal Shekhar and rendered beautifully by Papon. However, it never quite got the recognition it deserved.

Kal Nau Baje from Shortkut:

This poetic song where two lovers sing about using the moon as a mirror to see each other, was let down by the rather generic visuals. Penned by Javed Akhtar and set to tune by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, this again is an example of a beautiful song that went unnoticed just because it happened to be in the wrong movie.

Kuch To Hua Hai from Kal Ho Naa Ho:

Through the song, singers Shaan and Alka Yagnik, with the help of Javed Akhtar’s lyrics, try to piece together the changes brought about by love. The simple yet lucid lyrics set to tune by Shankar Ehsaan Loy will make listeners think about their first love.

Like Befikre, here too a gay couple is shown happily in love. Director Karan Johar, though, does not make too much of a fuss about it, which makes it all the more unique.

Poovukkul Olinthirukkum from Jeans:

This song’s calling card is that it was picturised on all the Seven Wonders of the World. However, a careful look at the lyrics will tell you that the seven wonders were not employed just for the visual grandeur.

Vairamuthu, in yet another powerful collaboration with music composer AR Rahman, says that true love is the first wonder of the world, as it was here much before rocks and sand came to exist. Unnikrishnan and Sujatha lend their vocals for this song that went on to become a chartbuster the year it was released. It continues to be a fan favourite now.

Pachai Nirame from Alaipayuthe:

Another track born out of A.R.Rahman – Vairamuthu team, the song uses a variety of colours to denote each and every aspect of the heroine. And so the female lead of the movie, Shalini, is said to have hair as black as the night, eyes as blue as the ocean and a heart as pure as the thumbai flower.
