Weekend Playlist – S. Thaman’s Hits

Like his acting debut in Boys where he played the role of Krishna (one among a five-member gang who hopes to make it big in the music industry) music composer S. Thaman has become a name to be reckoned with.

Born in Andhra Pradesh, the composer has predominantly worked in Telugu movies and has composed music for most superstars in the industry including Venkatesh, Ravi Teja, Allu Arjun, Ram Charan and Mahesh Babu. He has also worked on a handful of Tamil films, debuted in Hindi with Golmaal 4, and composed a track for Rohit Shetty’s upcoming movie Simmba.

As his latest album Amar Akbar Anthony reaches theatres today, which happens to be his birthday, here’s a look at some of his popular songs:

Tharai Erangiya – Eeram (2009)

A relatively new team with debutant director Arivazhakan and actors Aadhi and Sindhu Menon, the only known name to have worked on Eeram was director Shankar who produced the movie. This song is a romantic upbeat number sung by Suchitra, but it was overshadowed by the more popular Mazhaiye Mazhaiye from this album.

Neduvaali – Osthe (2011)

Director Dharani – the man behind masala movies like Dhill, Dhool and Gilli, roped in Thaman to score music for this remake of the Salman Khan starrer Dabangg. Sung by Rahul Nambiar and Mahathi, this song is a peppy number dominated by drums in the background, and it fits perfectly into the masala movie that this is.

Anjana Anjana – Vandhen Vendraan (2011)

Rendered by Aalap Raju, this one is a romantic track. The composition is basic, making it possible for us to tell the different instruments apart. Its music beings with the use of an organ and picks up pace as beats from electronic guitar get infused effortlessly.

Sweety – Race Gurram (2014)

Another romantic song, Sweety Sweety is rendered by Siddharth Mahadevan. It manages to retain a humm-able quality at certain portions, despite being generic otherwise. But that is also probably because the guitar tracks remind one of Allu Arjun’s other song – Feel My Love, from his 2004 movie Arya.
