The release of the Marvel juggernaut Avengers: Infinity War eclipses everything else this week. But after Karthik Subbaraj’s Mercury, there are more Tamil films releasing. In Bollywood, there is Sudhir Mishra’s political-thriller Daas Dev, and in Malayalam, there is Mammootty’s Uncle and more.
The film is a political-romantic thriller, a modern re-telling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novel ‘Devdas’ with actor Rahul Bhat as Dev, Richa Chadda as Paro and Aditi Rao Hydari as Chandini (Chadramukhi). Directed by Sudhir Mishra, the film’s songs ‘Sehmi Hai Dhadkan’ and ‘Rangdaari’ have created quite a buzz. The screenplay is written by Mishra and Jaydeep Sarkar, while the music has been composed by Aditya Dev.
A horror-thriller, starring Sai Pallavi in her debut Tamil movie, Diya is written and directed by AL Vijay. Releasing in both Tamil and Telugu, Diya revolves around Sai Pallavi’s character Thulasi and Naga Shourya’s Krishna. Sai Pallavi plays a mother in this film centered on pregnancy and choice. In an interview with Silverscreen, the actress said, “In this film, I learnt to emote one thing while feeling another. All my other films showcased me in a particular emotion. Premam was about love, Fidaa was about my effervescence, Kali had me play wise… but a mother has so many shades. I learnt to absorb those nuances. You might feel dead from within, but a mother does not show that on her face. I think this film matured me a lot. It has a team high on technique, and taught me to romance the camera, to savour the light. I’ve picked up a few things that will always stand by me. I’m blessed I got a chance to work with directors who are willing to teach me.”
Produced by Lyca Production, initially the film was titled Kaaru, but was later changed to Diya. Sam CS is the music composer.
This Vikram Prabhu-starrer is directed by debutant SS Surya. Opposite to Vikram Prabhu, stars Nikki Galrani and Bindu Madhavi. Bankrolled by T Sivakumar under Benn Consortium Studios (P) Ltd, the movie is an action-comedy. C. Sathya handles the music. Vikram Prabhu was last seen in the action movie Neruppu Da that released last year.
Written by actor Joy Mathew, who previously wrote and directed the movie Shutter, Uncle is a thriller-drama. The film is directed by Gireesh Damodar. Apart the leads Mammootty and Karthika Muraleedharan, Joy Mathew and Suresh Krishna are in supporting roles.
Touted to be a suspense thriller, Mammootty’s character will sport shades of grey. The film is co-produced by Joy Mathew and Sajai Sebastian. Music and background score for the movie is composed by Bijibal.
Thobama is an upcoming Malayalam comedy movie, directed by Mohsin Kassim. The movie stars Premam fame Sharafudheen, Krishna Sankar, Siju Wilson in the lead roles. The film has been jointly produced by Alphonse Puthren, director of Premam and Neram and Sukumaran Thekkepaatt. Rajesh Murugesan, who did the music for Premam, has composed for Thobama as well.
