Welcome To New York Trailer: A Potpourri Of Bollywood References

The trailer of Welcome To New York, Chakri Toleti’s directorial debut in Bollywood, is out and there are far too many references to keep up with.

In the beginning, we are introduced to Diljit Dosanjh’s character, Hero, who is seen recreating Gabbar Singh’s dialogue from Sholay. And soon enough, we meet the very ‘dhinchak’ designer Jinal Patel, played by Sonakshi Sinha.

Turns out, the two are on their way to New York and are actually the talent contest winners of the IIFA awards. However, the teaser trails off to introduce the other characters in the film. Karan Johar, who is playing himself and a gangster named Arjun, is seen screaming, threatening people, and discussing film offers. Riteish Deshmukh, presumably playing himself too, tells Johar how working with him could turn his career.

Sushant Singh Rajput, also playing himself, makes an appearance. But Hero is under the impression that he’s MS Dhoni, a role that Rajput played in 2016.

And while the references are being made and the two Johars confuse us, Rana Daggubati appears screaming “Maahishmathi!” while carrying a very fatigued Johar.

Glimpses of IIFA, party life in New York, and a possible chemistry between the two unlikely lead characters, Chakri Toleti’s film promises to have humour, some drama, and lots of inside jokes.

The movie is slated to release on February 23, and is likely to face a clash with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety starring Kartik Aaryan, Nushrat Bharucha and Sunny Singh.
