What’s New This Week: 10 Films and Series Releasing on OTT Platforms This Week

With states across India implementing strict restrictions and lockdowns to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus, filmmakers are postponing updates and releases of their films. This week, the makers of Major announced that the film, which was scheduled to release on July 2, has been postponed.

Fans of actor Mahesh Babu, who were expecting Sarkaru Vaari Paata updates on May 31 – the actor’s birthday, were informed by the makers of the film that no updates will be given out due to the current situation.

While theatres and cinema halss remain shut, OTT platforms have been seeing a steady flow of films and shows releasing. Here are 10 films and shows releasing on OTT platforms this week:

1. Friends: The Reunion (May 27) – Zee5

Friends: The Reunion, features Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc coming back together for a new episode titled, The One Where They Get Back Together. The actors will be returning to the show’s original soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank in USA, for a “real-life unscripted celebration” of the show. The episode also features special guests like David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon (who earlier appeared as Aniston’s sister in Friends) and Malala Yousafzai.

2. Ghost Lab (May 26) – Netflix

Ghost Lab is a thriller film about supernatural experiments that cross the boundaries between life and death. After witnessing a haunting in their hospital, two doctors become dangerously obsessed with obtaining scientific proof that ghosts exist.

3. Ek Mini Katha (May 27) – Amazon Prime Video

Ek Mini Katha revolves around Santosh, a youth who is struggling with ‘Micro Penis Syndrome’. When he has to marry Amrutha in an unavoidable situation, he begins to postpone his first night nuptials. How he resolves his situation forms the crux of the story.

4. Ragnarok Season 2 (May 27) – Netflix

Ragnarok is a Norwegian coming-of-age-drama with a twist of Norse mythology. A 17-year-old high school student who has just learned that they are pitted against an ancient and extremely powerful enemy that is holding an entire town, perhaps even an entire country, in an iron grip.

5. Disney’s Launchpad (May 28) – Disney+ Hotstar

Disney’s Launchpad Season One features live-action short films from a new generation of dynamic storytellers. Launchpad diversifies the types of stories that are being told and gives access to those who have historically not had it. Inspired by life’s journey, these first six short films for Disney+ are based on the theme ‘discover’.

6. Lucifer Season 5 Part 2 (May 28) – Netflix

Lucifer is about the devil, who gets bored with being the Lord of Hell. He relocates to Los Angeles, where he opens a nightclub and forms a connection with a homicide detective.

7. Maharani (May 28) – Sony Liv

Maharani is a fictionalised political drama set in the 90s in Bihar and revolves around Rani Bharati. Her life takes an unexpected turn when her husband and Bihar’s chief minister appoints Rani as his successor.

8. Panic (May 28) – Amazon Prime Video

Panic takes place in a small Texas town, where every summer the graduating seniors compete in a series of challenges, winner takes all, which they believe is their one and only chance to escape their circumstances and make their lives better. But this year, the rules have changed and the reward is larger than ever and the game has become even more dangerous. The players will come face to face with their deepest, darkest fears and be forced to decide how much they are willing to risk in order to win.

9. Carnaval (June 2) – Netflix

Carnaval revolves around a group of friends, very different from each other, but that complement each other. In the story, digital influencer Nina discovers a video of her boyfriend’s betrayal going viral on social media. In order to overcome the breakup, Nina uses her contacts to travel to Salvador for the Carnival with her three best friends. But they will find out that this experience will bring much more than new followers – it will make them rediscover the value of friendship.

10. Dancing Queens (June 3) – Netflix

Dancing Queens centres around Dylan Pettersson, a 23-year-old girl from a small island in the Bohuslän archipelago with big dancing aspirations. When she’s talked into cleaning the struggling drag club Queens, the club’s star dancer and choreographer accidentally discovers Dylan’s talent. She desperately wants to be a part of the show, but she’s a girl – and it’s a drag show. However, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
