White Short Film Review: Priya Mani And Amitabh Bachchan Come Together For A Cause

White, a new short film starring Priyamani and a dog, is set in a hill station and begins with her taking a white labrador on a walk. Shortly thereafter,  a major twist kicks in. One realizes the moral of the story and the purpose of the movie only after it is laid out through a booming voice over by Amitabh Bachchan at the end.

This voiceover neatly ties up the end with the beginning and the title is displayed against the milky way galaxy.

Directed by Manu Nag, who has previously worked as an assistant to Yogaraj Bhat and Malayalam filmmaker Sibi Malayil, White released on March 30. The short film is aimed at spreading awareness about eye donation.

Work on the movie reportedly began as early as July last year. The initial plan was to release it in five languages with Amitabh Bachchan’s voiceover in Hindi, Puneeth Rajkumar for Kannada, Priyamani for Malayalam and talks were on with Suriya and Anushka Shetty for Tamil and Telugu respectively.

However, the present version of the short film carries Bachchan’s voiceover and that too in English.

Priyamani, admittedly an animal-lover has her name attached to various social causes. Her latest endeavour is a marathon run to help raise funds for the education of girls. Named ‘Help A Girl Stay At School,’ the campaign has been initiated by the Habitat for Humanity India.

Initially, the director had plans to screen the short film in theatres prior to the screening of the feature films. “There is space to screen short films at multiplexes prior to screening a commercial film. It is in the rulebook, but nobody is following this. Since my film is on a social issue, and with Big B and other big personalities coming on board, I hope it will be considered,” the director was quoted in an IE report last year.

White has now been launched on Youtube marking Priyamani’s digital debut. The short film has been produced by S Rajshekar under the banner of Shri Sai Gagan Productions. Music is by Lovv Pran Mehta and cinematography is handled by Siji Jayadevan.
