Wong Kar-Wai Returns To Direct Gucci Family Drama

Veteran director Wong Kar-Wai will direct a feature film based on the murder of Maurizio Gucci, grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. The project will be produced by Annapurna Pictures, the Megan Ellison-owned production company that funded American Hustle, Her, Everybody Wants Some, and Spring Breakers, among other popular films.

Earlier reports had indicated that Ridley Scott would direct the film, with Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead. However, now Margot Robbie has been confirmed for the role of Patrizia Reggiani. Reggiani was arrested in 1999 for killing her ex-husband Maurizio Gucci.

The project was announced a long time ago, and the first draft has already been written, by Andrea Berloff of World Trade Center fame, and Charles Randolph, who worked in The Big Short.

This project will be Wong Kar-Wai’s second English language feature film after My Blueberry Nights (2007), a romantic drama that starred Jude Law and Norah Jones. The auteur is best known for his Cantonese language films like In The Mood For Love and Chungking Express, both set in Hong-Kong. His last film Grand Master was a Chinese-Hong Kong martial arts movie starring his regular collaborator Tony Leung. The film released three years ago.

Earlier this year, he had teamed up with a major Chinese production company, Huanxi Media Group, to direct and co-produce an original, 18-episode drama series.
