Yogi Babu-Starrer ‘Gurkha’ Theatrical Rights Bagged By Libra Productions

The Tamil Nadu theatrical rights for director Sam Anton’s Gurkha, starring Yogi Babu, has been acquired by Libra Productions. The film is likely to release on June 28 or the first week of July.

C Ravinder of Libra Productions told Silverscreen that they are planning to release the film in 300 screens in the state, and an audio launch event is likely to be held on June 18.

He recently produced Natpuna Ennanu Theriyuma, and said that the delay issues he faced prompted him to get into distribution. “I realised that instead of producing more and more movies, someone has to get down to the distribution aspect and release the movies that are pending. This will be healthy for the growth of small budget movies.”

Libra recently also acquired the rights of Bobby Simha’s delayed film Vallavanukkum Vallavan.

Gurkha wrapped up shoot in February this year, and a teaser released in April.

Yogi Babu stars as a security guard in the film, and actors Elyssa Erhad, Anand Raj, Karunas, Livingston and Pradeep Rawat play important roles. Music is by Raj Aryan, cinematography is by Aravind Krishna and editing by Ruben.

The story revolves around the hijacking of a famous mall in Chennai. The film is a satire which parodies events that made headlines in Tamil Nadu in the last few years. Director Sam Anton is known for his comedies. He made the horror-comedy Darling in 2015 which introduced GV Prakash as an actor. He later directed Enaku Inoru Paer Iruku and 100.

Gurkha is Yogi Babu’s second film as the lead actor. He was seen as a comic lead in Kolamaavu Kokila, and also has Dharmaprabhu lined up for release.

He earlier told Silverscreen that he plays a full-length comedy role in Gurkha but it is not the role of a typical hero. “I play a watchman in the movie. Though Sam Anton wrote the movie with me in mind, it’s not a hero role. At least, not the kind of heroes I grew up watching.”
