First Look Of Ranveer Singh’s ‘Gully Boy’ Released

Ranveer Singh, who is riding high after the success of Simmba, revealed the first-look of his next film Gully Boy. It is scheduled to release on February 14.

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film stars Alia Bhatt and is inspired by real-life incidents. It is based on the lives of Mumbai based hip-hop artistes Vivian Fernandez a.k.a Divine and Naved Shaikh a.k.a Naezy.

“It is the story which represents Mumbai in its true sense and the city is my hometown, these are my people, this is my language so this is the story I am really attached to. It’s an underdog story about a kid who broke through from great adversity in life to make it as a recording artist,” said Singh in a News18 article.

Hip-hop is a cultural movement that began in the west during the late ‘70s. Its facets include rap and graffiti which came to be used by marginalized groups to express dissent. Only recently we have seen hip-hop in Bollywood, by Badshah, Yo-Yo Honey Singh and others.

About Gully Boy, Divine said in a video interview, “I think the film is going to help the movement and I also think the album of Gully Boy will change the game.”

“You don’t have to necessarily be from the streets to do hip-hop. You can be a college-going kid and still do hip-hop. It goes wrong when you try to be someone/something you are not,” he said.

Divine said Ranveer Singh knows hip-hop, and would be best for the role. “He is a fan of hip-hop. So he knows his ones and twos. He even told me stuff that I didn’t know.”

Gully Boy was announced in February 2018, and is produced by Zoya Akhtar’s Tiger Baby Productions and Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Shidwani’s Excel Entertainment. Music for the movie is composed by Shankar Eshaan Loy.

The movie was recently selected for the 69th Berlin Film Festival scheduled to be held between February 7 and February 17.
