International honour for Vairamuthu

Writer and lyricist Vairamuthu’s novel Moondraam Ulaga Por has been recognised as a great literary work by Tansri KR Somasundaram Literary Foundation. Vairamuthu’s book has been chosen the best among 198 literary works that were submitted to the foundation. The award and the prize money of $10,000 (Rs. 6 lakhs) will be collected by Vairamuthu in Malaysia on September 7.

Moondraam Ulaga Por, a book with global warming as its premise, released in 2012. Talking about the honour, Vairamuthu said, “I consider this a Gnanapeeth Award at the world level. The slow disappearance of agriculture because of globalisation is the content of this novel. The novel warns of the great dangers that we face if the situation continues.”

The award jointly instituted by KR Somasundaram Literary Foundation and National Land Finance Cooperative Society of Malaysia recognizes talented writers in Tamil language every two years.
