Nedumudi Venu is all set to reprise his role from Indian in the sequel. He will return to the franchise as CBI Officer Krishnamurthy.

The character was introduced in the first film as a government appointed authority to look into the murders committed by the vigilante known as Indian thatha. According to a spokesperson for the film, Nedumudi Venu’s character has been written into the new movie as well.

“But, it won’t be a full fledged role. The new script has shaped up differently and so Krishnamurthy will be seen, but won’t be as active as he was in the first film,” the spokesperson said.

Nayanthara has been chosen as the female lead for the movie. Kamal Haasan will be the lead, but reports indicate that he will be seen in a mentor-like role as his character, Indian Thatha, would have aged considerably as the sequel takes place 22 years later.

A source close to the team said, “The story of Indian 2 is very relevant to the current socio-political climate in the country. If we go by the date and time alone, Indian thatha would be very very old. Logically, it would be hard for him to keep being a vigilante. So, a young actor will also be brought in.”

At present, Indian 2 director Shankar is scouting for locations with cinematographer Ravi Varman. An official launch of the project is expected to happen later this year. Shooting dates will be finalised once Kamal Haasan wraps up season 2 of the reality show Bigg Boss Tamil.

News of the sequel was first made public in September last year. Dil Raju was initially attached to the project as producer and even made an appearance on Bigg Boss with Kamal Haasan and Shankar. Later, he decided to leave the project and Lyca Productions stepped in.

Story for the new film has been written by Kabilan Vairamuthu, Jeyamohan and Lakshmi Saravanakumar (who recieved the Sahithya Academy Award for Kaanagan).
