Pa Ranjith To Produce A Film Based On Perumal Murugan’s Short Story; Murugan Will Pen Dialogues

At the Mathrubhumi International Festival, yesterday during the launch of his new book, Amma (translated from his Tamil work titled Thondra Thunai), author Perumal Murugan revealed that a work of his will find its way to the big screen very soon.

Murugan was answering a question in the session on his love for cinema. In the memoir, which is about his mother, he writes about running away from home as a young boy to work in the movies. “I wanted to write lyrics,” he said at the session, laughing.

The author also revealed that over the years, several filmmakers have expressed interest in his work. In fact, Balu Mahendra met him once and offered to turn his novel into a film but the filmmaker soon got busy with a Kannada movie and Murugan never heard back from him.

However, one of Murugan’s short stories will soon be made into a film. “The film is being produced by Pa Ranjith and the director’s name is Karthik. It is based on my short story and I have penned the dialogues,” Murugan said amid applause.

More details about the project are awaited.
