Rosshan Andrrews On Prathi Poovan Kozhi: “I’ve Always Wanted To Do A Realistic Film”

The first poster of Prathi Poovan Kozhi, directed by Rosshan Andrrews and written by Unni R, was released by actor Mohanlal on Wednesday evening. The poster features three roosters superimposed over an angry Manju Warrier staring into the camera. In the film, Manju plays Madhuri, a saleswoman in Kottayam.

This is Manju’s second project with Andrrews who directed her comeback film, How Old Are You (2012).

Prathi Poovan Kozhi isn’t based on Unni R’s novella of the same name, says Andrrews who is also playing one of the central roles in the film. “I asked him if I could use this title since I liked it very much. The film is based on another published story of his, whose name I can’t reveal now.”

Andrrews and Unni R were initially planning to collaborate for another film, titled Diego Garcia, starring Nivin Pauly. However, the project was shelved for technical reasons. “Diego Garcia is a big-budget film which needs a lot of planning and time. We haven’t abandoned the project. The screenplay is ready. Work will officially begin after the release of Prathi Poovan Kozhi,” says the director.

“It’s a very relevant subject. Manju’s character will touch a chord with every woman,” says Andrrews. “After Kayamkulam Kochunni, which was a period drama, I wanted to do a realistic film, about people leading ordinary lives. I have always been fascinated by that genre.”

Andrrews is also making his acting debut through the film. “I like to act and make people act. I was a part of drama club in college. Colleagues like Nivin Pauly, Jude Anthony and Abrid Shine have, in the past, approached me with acting opportunities. But I turned them down as acting was never a part of my plan in cinema. I decided to give it a try now because it’s my film and the character suits me.” Andrrews says he is now confident about doing more roles, with good directors and writers.

Prathi Poovan Kozhi has cinematography by G Balamurugan, and music by Gopi Sunder. The film releases in theatres in December.
