If songs can be taken out of context, and perhaps only songs can be, Chingari koi bhadke to saawan use bujhaye/ saawan jo agan lagaye use kaun bujaye would be the best bet to do so. Anand Bakshi’s lyrics, Kishore Kumar’s voice and RD Burman’s music make this song from the film Amar Prem one of the most precious musical gifts.
The song Mere khwabon mein tum is alluring even visually, with Kishore Kumar singing both on and off stage; and Meena Kumari (as Mala in the film), joining him, waltzing and dancing, and expressively looking into his eyes. The disjunct I experienced was one of trying to fit a pre-Partition voice to the modernity of another film, or creating a seamlessness between long-suffering looks and the sweetness of Mangeshkar’s voice – both of which Meena Kumari escapes in Naya Andaz.
The song Naam gum jayega conveyed both the morphing tendency of time and immortality of the singing voice, all the time present underneath this amazing film about what lasts and what does not.The subtle distinction between a living past and a dead history that cannot tolerate questions provides, through the comic spirit, a profound understanding of not only Aarti but also her predicament in negotiating with time gone, and time to come.
Another disco hit, Tamma Tamma Loge might have been remixed and redone in newer Hindi films but the original is still considered to be one of Lahiri’s most noteworthy songs.Sung by Lahiri himself, this track was one of the album’s biggest hits, with other songs like I am a Disco Dancer and Jimmy Jimmy also becoming huge sensations.

However, love becomes more expansive when intimacy is not about being there, but being able to cry on someone’s shoulder, of being held when long travels of life are conveyed. That Sanjeev Kumar could have pulled off the role of being a husband who takes a step back to wait and watch the unfolding of political ambition and success in his wife’s life is also particularly appropriate.
The words of this song do not particularly stand out for their lyrics; except that some of us would know when a literal and metaphoric reference has come together in a line such as jab mein raaton mein tare ginta hun, aur tere kadmon ki aahat sunta hun (when I count stars at night, and hear your approaching footsteps)- it is both the lover’s longing at night who gazes at the star-studded sky and fantasises the motion, but it is also the narrative link that makes this song integral to the story.
The ones seeking solace and exaltation of their own struggles must necessarily go to another time. It is not surprising that waqt in Urdu means at least four things – time and opportunity; occasion and season.
We gravitate to songs that reflect our waqt; not our times.
I wonder if estrangement and alienation in Indian society is more threatening than death; for death does not disturb the moral universe, such as the sanctimonious edifice of the family upon which the Indian society stands. Unlike Talaq, Mr. and Mrs. 55 does not get to a real marriage; an act both physical and metaphorical, but makes the westernised divorce-seeking wife learn the value of the family.
Evocatively the song says, ‘Jab Bhi Khayaalon Mein Tuu Aaye/Mere Badan Se Kushbuu Aaye/Mehake Badan Mein Raha Na Jaaye’, which translates as ‘Whenever you enter the thoughts, my body gives out a fragrance, and the fragrant body is hard to live with. ‘ This is intense desire in a married couple that finds hard to have a dwelling in which love-making could find its full expression.
What we get are contrivances that the makers sell as easy justifications, which reaches its unforgivable peak in the show’s trainwreck of a finale. *Spoiler alert* In it, a revelation of childhood abuse, sold in a brief flashback scene without any exposition, is called upon to justify Bhumi’s sexual frigidness.
