Netflix Announces ‘Bridgerton’ Spin-Off Series Based on Queen Charlotte

Netflix announced a spin-off series to their successful period drama series Bridgerton. The new series will focus on the early life of the popular character Queen Charlotte, who is portrayed by Golda Rosheuvel.

According to a report by Variety, the limited series will focus on the origin of Queen Charlotte and follow a young Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh).

Bridgerton is based on author Julia Quinn’s best-selling novels. The books do not feature Queen Charlotte and the character was added specifically for the show. According to Deadline, the spin-off will centre on the rise and love life of this re-imagined character.

The show’s executive producer and writer Shonda Rhimes told Deadline, “As we continue to expand the world of Bridgerton, we now have the opportunity to devote even more of the Shondaland fold to the Bridgerton-verse.”

Tom Verica and Betsy Beers will serve as the upcoming series’ executive producers.

Apart from this, seasons three and four of Bridgerton will see Jess Brownell as the showrunner. She will be taking over for Chris Van Dusen, who served as the showrunner for the first two seasons of the show.

“We’ve worked with Jess Brownell for over a decade and have long wanted to find the right project to place in her hands. When it came time to pass the baton, I knew this unique voice was vital to the future of the show,” Rhimes added.

Bridgerton first premiered on Christmas day in 2020 and it was the fifth-largest Netflix original series launch to date. The series is set in 19th century London high society and it revolves around the siblings of the influential Bridgerton family as they attempt to find love.

The shooting of series’ second season is underway and will follow the love story of the Bridgerton family’s eldest son Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).
