“It is My Duty To Honour K Balachander With a Statue”: Vairamuthu

Vairamuthu, KB Statue

Lyricist Vairamuthu believes it is his life mission to honour director K Balachander. He is in the process of installing a statue of the director.

Maalai Malar reports that K Balachander’s ancestral home in Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu, has been turned into a primary school. And it is here that the likeness of KB – in the form of a bust – will be installed. Maalai Malar reports that the statue will be unveiled by the director’s wife, Rajam Balachander, in a ceremony on July 9. Kamal Haasan, directors Mani Ratnam and Vasanth, are among the film industry stars who will attend the unveiling.

In a statement, Vairamuthu says, “At a time when Tamil cinema was rehashing the same old tropes, he brought in a freshness. He brought to light, some of the darkest parts of the society, and changed culture. He brought Tamil cinema to the national stage. He must not be forgotten, just like his films are unforgettable. His films cannot be labeled as successes or failures, but as those we’ve understood, and those we have not.”

He also adds, “I consider this not just a token of my gratitude to him, but as an act of honouring the greats who went before me. I consider this a life mission.”
