Director Pa Ranjith’s Kaala released a year ago on this day. The film starred Rajinikanth (his second movie with Ranjith after Kabali), Easwari Rao, Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar, and others, and revolved around Tamil people living in the slums of Dharavi in Mumbai.
The people in the slum agitate against Hari Dada (Nana Patekar), a minister trying to evict them from the slum to seize their land. ‘Katravai Patravai’, meaning ‘Educate, Agitate’, was written with the idea that it should reach as many people as possible, the lyricists said later. The song is similar to the Kaala theme track, with rap portions by Yogi B, Arunraja Kamaraj and Roshan Jamrock, and a punch dialogue by Rajinikanth.
