Song: Narumugaiye

Singer: Bombay Jayashri, Unnikrishanan

Lyrics: Vairamuthu

Music: AR Rahman

Film: Iruvar

Actors: Madhoo, Aishwarya Rai, Mohanlal

Happy birthday, Madhoo. As a tribute, our song of the day is ‘Narumugaiye’ from the 1997 Mani Ratnam film Iruvar starring Madhoo in a cameo.

Mohanlal and Madhoo are featured in a film within the film. In parallel scenes, Mohanlal reenacts some of the scenes to his wife Aishwarya Rai, and both sequences are about two people newly in love. Music for the film was by AR Rahman, and this song was inspired by a Sangam poem that speaks of a love which is like “red earth and pouring rain”.

Madhoo, who began her career with the Tamil film Azhagan in 1991, has acted in films such as Roja, Gentleman and Phool Aur Kaante. She played the lead and supporting characters in several Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi films. Her latest Tamil release is Agni Devi, which was embroiled in controversy, after actor Bobby Simha claimed he had walked out of the film, and that the team shot his portions using a body double and dubbed his voice too.
