It’s been 24 years since Rajinikanth’s Baasha released in theatres, and till today it comes on TV every other month. Two years back it re-released in a digitized version and joined the new ‘running successfully’ films posters, and last year, Muthu his other most successful film re-released. It is for the love of Rajini from these films that director Karthik Subbaraj made Petta. Rajini was recently asked about his style at a press meet, and he said lightly, “Avangaluku etho pidichu pochu.”

Who can better explain Superstar to us than the Rajini from ‘Style Style Thaan’ in Baasha? This was Rajini’s first and best gangster film. Auto driver Manikkam as the don Maanik Baasha makes a James Bond entry in this song, but he soon throws away his gun and comes dancing towards us. He is close enough for us see his mirror-like cooling glasses that reflects all lights in the studio, and Nagma, but we can’t know more. In tight leather pant-jackets, on a slippery glass floor, he dances with Nagma who says his style makes him worthy of her, to this Baasha says her figure makes her worthy of him. But what really makes the song worth it is Rajini’s dance, it’s one of his best ever.
