A R Murgadoss’ Akira, starring Sonakshi Sinha, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Anurag Kashyap, is out. A Hindi remake of the Tamil film Mouna Guru (2011), the film has a woman (Sonakshi Sinha) as the lead character who sets out to prove her innocence by fighting back after being embroiled in a crime plot.

The trailer, a little more than two-and-a-half minutes, exudes the drama and action as promised. After a rather mellow beginning in Jodhpur, Akira (Sonakshi Sinha) heads to Mumbai for her higher studies, after a three year break from her education. Facing bullying from her college mates, Akira brings out her hidden violent streak – a side, she confesses, she had to hide for three years.

The trailer goes on to introduce the ‘villain’ of the film played by Anurag Kashyap. In a bigger role compared to his previous acting ventures, Kashyap takes a backseat from filmmaking and appears on screen as the corrupt cop who is determined to”get rid” of Akira – only to learn that she is no ordinary girl. The trailer shuttles between Akira’s and this cop’s perspectives.

Scenes of violence – including the breaking of necks –  is high, in the trailer. It shows a kohl-eyed Sonakshi Sinha in a role different from her roles in the past. While Konkona Sen Sharma’s cop role is understated in the trailer, it’s Anurag Kashyap’s role that was refreshing to see, especially considering his involvement in the film was kept low key.

The film is slated to release on 2 September, under the banner of Fox Star Studios.
