Actor Mishti Mukherjee died in Bengaluru after suffering from kidney failure on Friday night, PTI reported. According to the actor’s family, the Keto diet that she was on was the cause of the kidney failure.
The family had issued a statement through the 27-year-old actor’s publicist on Sunday.
“Mishti Mukherjee, who marked her brilliance in many films and music videos with her ace acting, is no more. Due to the keto diet, her kidney failed in Bangalore and she breathed her last on Friday night, the actress suffered a lot of pain. Unforgettable and unfortunate loss. May her soul rest in peace,” the statement read.
Mukherjee began her career in the Bengali film industry. She made her Bollywood debut with a guest appearance in the film Life Ki Toh Lag Gayi, a dark comedy film starring Kay Kay Menon, Neha Bhasin, and Ranvir Shorey. She then went on to feature in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi films. She has also appeared in several music videos.
Ketogenic diets, or Keto diets as they are popularly known, have been advised with extreme caution for a long time. In a Keto diet, there is very little carbohydrate consumption and the body relies on the energy derived from fat. There have been several uninvited side effects associated with Keto diets such as fatigue, flu, and diarrhea.

“The Keto diet or the ketogenic diet works in reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing the intake of proteins and fat. This diet was first administered to epileptic children. The diet has proven successful in reducing the frequency of epileptic seizures in children,” said Dharini Krishnan, a consultant dietitian based in Chennai.
“The diet leads to the sudden change of macronutrients in the body. This can lead to long term negative ramifications. The diet has to be administered properly with professional help and advice. The diet has to be tailor fit for each person’s body: keeping in mind their physical and physiological habits for the diet to be healthy and not have long-term negative ramifications,” she added.
