The case of late TV presenter and actor VJ Chitra’s suicide was transferred to the Central Crime Branch on January 6, a day after her husband Hemnath was charged by the Central Crime Branch for cheating students by promising them seats at medical colleges, reported Dtnext.
The transfer order was given by Chennai Commissioner of Police Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal following a request by Chitra’s mother, according to the report.
Hemnath, who is already under arrest for abetment to suicide after Chitra was found dead in a hotel, was charged by the Central Crime Branch on Tuesday, for cheating students with the promise of medical college seats to the tune of Rs 1.05 crore. The case, which dates back to 2015, was initiated after a complaint was filed at the JJ Nagar police station in Chennai. While the investigation was underway, the case was transferred to the Central Crime Branch, who subsequently charged Hemnath.
Hemnath, who is a Chennai-based businessman, was arrested on December 14, 2020, by the Nazrethpettai police. The arrest was made after Chitra was found dead in a hotel at Nazrethpettai, where the pair were staying, on December 9, 2020. Subsequently, Hemnath was booked under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code and lodged at the Ponneri Jail.
Meanwhile, Chitra’s body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College hospital for post-mortem investigations. The police confirmed that she committed suicide.

Following Chitra’s death, a mandatory probe was initiated by the RDO, who then submitted a 16-page report after interrogating family and friends of Chitra and Hemnath, as reported by Thanti TV. The probe ruled out dowry harassment as a reason for the suicide. While no further details had been divulged at the time, the Nazrethpettai police had told Silverscreen India that they were considering all angles and had not ruled out any possibilities.
