Netflix Announces New Movie Every Week in 2021; Leonardo DiCaprio, Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson Headline Star-Studded Slate

Netflix announced on Tuesday that it will release at least one new movie every week in 2021.

Netflix has shared a video with scenes from some of its upcoming original movies, including Red Notice (Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot), Army of the Dead (Zack Snyder), and Don’t Look Up (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence).

The video has teasers of several other upcoming films, including Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised and and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut Tick, Tick… Boom! as well as Malcolm & Marie (Zendaya), Escape from the Spiderhead (Chris Hemsworth), and Sweet Girl (Jason Momoa).

Netflix also announced the end of the film series To All the Boys and The Kissing Booth, with stars Lana Condor and Joey King saying they “love a good ending”.

Netflix has 70 films releasing this year, including 52 English-language live-action films, 10 non-English films, and eight animated features.

In its press release, Netflix said that it will bring a new movie every week “featuring the biggest stars including, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Meryl Streep, Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Garner, Gal Gadot, Dave Bautista, Naomi Watts, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington and Octavia Spencer. And films from your favorite filmmakers like Zack Snyder, Nora Fingscheidt, Joe Wright, Antoine Fuqua, Shawn Levy, Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman and the directorial debuts from Halle Berry and Lin-Manuel Miranda.”

While most of the films do not have a release date yet, Malcolm & Marie, starring John David Washington and Zendaya, is set to release on the streaming platform on February 5.

In 2020, with theatres shut due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Netflix and other streaming services saw a huge spike in their subscriber numbers. In the first half of the year, Netflix added around 16 million new subscribers, which was double the new sign-ups it had seen at the end of 2019, reported the BBC.

In October in a letter to its shareholders, Netflix had released a note saying, ” In the first nine months of 2020, we added 28.1m paid memberships, which exceeds the 27.8m that we added for all of 2019.” New subscriptions had slowed down in the latter half of 2020, which Netflix attributed to “record first half results and the pull-forward effect” of the first half.

With the streaming service now adding more than 70 original films to its slate, it remains to be seen whether the subscriber share increases this year for the OTT giant or decreases.
