Mila Kunis, the American actor who is best known for her performance in the psychological thriller Black Swan (2010), will star in the upcoming feature film adaptation of the mystery novel Luckiest Girl Alive authored by Jessica Knoll, Netflix announced in a press release on Monday.
Knoll will be writing the screenplay of the film, which will be named after the novel. American writer and producer Mike Barker, who has co-produced the TV series The Handmaid’s Tale, will directing the film.
The film will be produced by Bruna Papandrea and Jeanne Snow (under the banner Made Up Stories), Erik Feig and Lucy Kitada (for Picturestart), and Kunis for Orchard Farm Productions banner. Knoll, Lisa Sterbakov, Shayne Fiske Goldner, and Steve Hutensky will serve as the executive producers.

According to the press release, the synopsis of Luckiest Girl Alive reads, “Luckiest Girl Alive centers on Ani FaNelli, a sharp-tongued New Yorker who appears to have it all: a sought-after position at a glossy magazine, a killer wardrobe, and a dream Nantucket wedding on the horizon. But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Bradley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life.”
The book was translated into 38 languages and featured in the 2015 bestseller list by The New York Times. Luckiest Girl Alive, which is written in the first-person narrative, was Knoll’s debut novel.
Expressing her excitement over the project, Knoll wrote on social media, “After 6 years of relentless rewriting, rejections, studio changes, and tortuous periods of stagnation I am SO proud to share this news and so excited to watch Mila Kunis bring Ani FaNelli to life. Let’s make a movie.”
The film’s release date has not been announced yet.
