Spike Lee, the American film director and producer who won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his film BlacKkKlansman, will be producing the upcoming Netflix film Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu directed by Stefon Bristol.
Netflix made the announcement on Tuesday through a press release.
Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu is “set in East Africa, 1928, where the roguish Black American gunslinger Gordon Hemingway teams up with the elite warrior Princess Zenebe of Ethiopia to rescue their kidnapped regent from an ancient evil”.
Hank Woon, the American author, game designer and screenwriter, has written the original screenplay with additional revisions done by both Woon and Fredrica Bailey.
Lee will be producing the film along with Lloyd Levin and Beatriz Levin, who had initially optioned the screenplay from Woon and brought the film to Bristol and Lee.
Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu will be co-produced by Oliver Oftedal and Tom Olsson for Goodbye Kansas’ production arm Infinite Entertainment with award-winning visual effects company Goodbye Kansas leading the visual effects on the film.
Lee had also directed, produced and co-written the American war drama film Da 5 Bloods, that premiered on Netflix in June 2020, making Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu his second collaboration with the streaming giant and Levin, who had worked with him on Da 5 Bloods.

Gordon Hemingway & The Realm of Cthulhu also marks Bristol’s second directorial collaboration with Netflix. Bristol made his directorial debut in feature films with See You Yesterday (2019) that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released globally on Netflix. The film was co-written by Woon and Bailey. The time-travel adventure film won the Best First Screenplay at the 35th Independent Spirit Awards.
Bristol has worked as an assistant to Lee while he was filming Black KkKlansman, a 2018 American biographical black comedy crime film.
