Bong Joon-Ho, the Korean director who won four Academy Awards in 2020 for his film Parasite, will helm a Korean animated film about humans and deep-sea water creatures, the Korean news agency Yonhap reported on Thursday.
Bong began working on the project back in 2018 and finished the screenplay this year in January. It is being produced by the Korean VFX and production company 4th Creative Party.
The untitled film will be a Computer Generated Imagery feature film and will be his fourth collaboration with the studio after Snowpiercer, Okja, and Mother.
He disclosed this project while backstage at the Oscars 2020 along with another English film that he is working on and is expected to release after the animation film project, according to Indie Wire.
“The Korean film is located in Seoul and has unique elements of horror and action,” Bong said, adding, “It’s difficult to define the genre of my films. The English project is a drama film based on a true event that happened in 2016. Of course I won’t know until I finish the script, but it has to be set half in the UK. and half in the US.”
In 2020, he told Variety that each script is comparable to the scope of Parasite and his 2009 film Mother.
He is also the executive producer along with Adam McKay for HBO Max’s spin-off television series on Parasite which became the first foreign language film to win an Oscar for the Best Picture. The limited series was announced in 2020.
